Five Things To Do in New Hope and Lambertville

Theater, kid-friendly activities and a vibrant dining scene top the list

by Tara Behan Marmur

When I moved to Bucks County eight years ago, I would be lying if I said I was excited about my new address in Doylestown. I grew up in Delaware County, stayed local for college by attending St. Joseph’s University (go Hawks!), and happily spent my early adulthood in Chester and Montgomery County towns including Wayne, Malvern and Conshohocken. While Bucks County’s proximity to North Jersey certainly made my husband’s daily commute a lot more manageable, it felt SO far away from all my favorite restaurants, shops and towns I loved so much—including Philadelphia!

However, I quickly learned how much there is to love about Bucks County  and all that it has to offer. New Hope and Lambertville are two of them. My family has spent countless afternoons and evenings exploring the towns and we still find some “new-to-us” spots during every visit. Need ideas for your next visit? Here are our top five favorite things to do in New Hope and Lambertville.

I’m always checking the seasonal lineup of shows at Bucks County Playhouse. Since 1939, BCP has hosted an impressive roster of actors and entertainers, including Grace Kelly, Liza Minnelli and Robert Redford. This summer I’m looking forward to seeing BCP’s Kinky Boots (June 24 – July 30) and Dames at Sea (Aug. 12 – Sept. 11). Photo courtesy of Visit Bucks County.

With views overlooking the Delaware River, Stella is my first choice when dining in New Hope. When weather cooperates, my husband and I always opt to dine outdoors on Stella’s expansive deck to take in all the views.

There are many B&Bs, boutique hotels and inns scattered throughout New Hope and Lambertville, but I specifically have my eye on the luxurious The Inn at Bowman’s Hill for my next overnight getaway with my husband. I’ll be booking an in-suite couples massage, followed by an outdoor lunch by the pool, then dinner at Amelia, the nearby BYOB. Sounds like the perfect staycation to me!

My kids (ages 5 and 7) never pass up an opportunity to visit The Bucks County Children’s Museum. I liken it to a smaller-scale version of Philadelphia’s Please Touch Museum. Climbing the rock wall, playing the life-size version of the game “Operation” and shopping at the general store are just some of the highlights of this Bucks County gem.

Another thing my kids love to do? Walk across the pedestrian walkway on the New Hope-Lambertville Bridge. Look for the marker that shows when you’re crossing into New Jersey or Pennsylvania. The kids love being able to say they are standing in two states at the same time! Photo courtesy of Visit Bucks County.
